Poppo’s Taqueria: A Poppin’ Spot for Northern Cali Inspired Mexican Street Food

Poppo’s Taqueria is a popular fast-casual restaurant on Central Ave serving delicious tacos, burritos, bowls and quesadillas with fresh and organic ingredients. There are multiple locations around Florida and aren’t we glad they popped up here?! An eye-catcher are their wholesome and delicious menu items from protein to toppings and their homemade tortillas.

Poppo’s is a family-owned Mexican inspired restaurant with inspiration from San Francisco street food. Poppo was the nickname of the owner’s grandfather who passed on a few years ago. He actually didn’t like spicy foods but it was more of an honor to name the family business after him.

I’ve been a few times for lunch and dinner and can say I found my favorite combination of flavors and I’m completely obsessed with it.

Let’s dive in!

Burrito
Make Your Own Burrito

Prepare yourself, the burritos are massive! You have three options: A Vegetarian Burrito with brown rice, black beans, tempeh, pico de gallo and melted jack cheese on a 12” flour tortilla, A Classic Burrito with white rice, pinto beans, carnitas, pico de gallo, hot sauce and melted jack cheese on a 12” flour tortilla, and a Make Your Own with the choice of rice, beans, protein and cold toppings on a 12” flour tortilla with melted jack cheese.

I decided to make my own and packed it with my favorite ingredients starting with their house-made flour tortilla, brown rice, ancho chicken, black beans, greens, pico de gallo, honey-lime slaw, and salsa verde. This was amazing and everything was so fresh and flavorful. I ate half and couldn’t move…burrito success!

The tacos here are a must! You get a choice of protein and cold toppings on a homemade corn or wheat tortilla. My friend Jan ordered two Make Your Own Tacos and she absolutely loved every bite. She agreed that the flavors were tasty and fresh. The customizations are endless and you can make it exactly how you want it.

Every Tuesday is Name Day where they post a name on Facebook. If you have that name, you’re in luck because you just scored two free tacos! Be sure to follow them and cross your fingers every Tuesday.

Baby Bowl
Baby Bowl

Although I love how delicious the tortillas are, if you’re dodging carbs, they have two bowl options with a choice of protein and fresh toppings. The Baby Bowl is 16oz and the Big Bowl is 32oz. I personally think the Baby Bowl is plenty. My Aunt Karen ordered this bowl and really enjoyed it. The guac on top was a must to bring all the flavors together. A bowl is a great option for a filling meal.

Quesadilla
Quesadilla

You can never go wrong with a quesadilla. Here, you get one 10” flour or two 6” corn tortillas with melted cheese and your choice of cold fillings. Add protein for $2 more. I kept it simple and got greens, pico de gallo and ancho chicken. The best part? The tortilla! Everything inside was great too, don’t get me wrong, but the crispy tortilla really won me over.

Chips & Salsa
Chips & Salsa

Do not snooze on these chips, they are truly the best in St. Pete! They were perfectly crunchy, crispy and salty. Is anyone else like me where they can munch on chips and salsa all day? The salsa was fresh.

They offer beer and kombucha on tap, along with fountain drinks with natural sugars. The lemonade calls my name each time.

A Mexican restaurant with quality ingredients is hard to find and is definitely a staple for Poppo’s Taqueria. Be sure to check them out for a fresh and delicious meal with unique combinations.
