Old Key West Bar & Grill – Not so old…with a fantastic new menu!

September 1st, 2016

Kevin and I have a standing date for lunch every other Wednesday.  Recently the Old Key West Bar & Grill was mentioned in our Facebook Group and I told Kevin that I had not been there in years and that we should make that our Wednesday lunch date.  My recollections of it in the past was that it was a dive and that the food was just okay bar food.  It is still very casual but as far as the food goes, that is so not the case anymore.

Crystal and Mitch Faber bought Old Key West in January of 2015 and boy have they done wonders!  Let’s start with the menu.  Everything sounded so good that I could not decide and still have to go back to try more.

On Wednesdays it is $5 build your own burgers and BOGO on all drinks up to $8.  The ambiance feels like you are on a tropical vacation and even though I rarely drink beer, we both ordered beer.

We asked our server, the bartender Jonesie, what he would recommend from the appetizers and he recommended either The Keys Fried Chokes (Fried Artichokes) or the Fried Banana Peppers.  Then he also mentioned that the Homemade Smoked Fish Spread was amazing and made with Mahi.  We decided on the Chokes and the Fish Spread and I am so glad that we did!!  The fried artichokes completely surprised me.  I did not know what to expect.  They were so tender and served piping hot.  The dipping sauce was tangy and refreshing.  Loved them!!

The fish spread was perfectly smoked.  A tangy, delicious summer treat!  I really felt like I was on vacation!

We had the hardest time deciding what to order, but I could not resist the Chicken & Andouille Sausage Gumbo in which I added Shrimp for $1.00 (seriously, what a steal?!).  It was delicious with heat that sneaks up on you as you eat it.  Fresh and delicious!!  Perfect on a rainy Wednesday afternoon!  Also, I took half of this home.  We were stuffed at this point.  We ate the rest of it on Saturday afternoon and I have to tell you it was even better than it was that day!!  Holy gumbo did those flavors come together!

Kevin ordered the item that I was torn between which was the Chicken -N- Dumplins’.  My mother used to make this when I was little, so that is total comfort food for me.  LOVED it!  Tasted very close to mom’s.  Get it my belly!!  FYI…the coloring of the inside of the bowl skewed the coloring of the sauce.  It is not really green.

Kevin was also dying to try the Homemade Chili so he got an order to go for dinner.  I don’t have a picture but he said that it was some of the best chili that he has ever had.

Bottom line, if you have not been to The Old Key West Bar & Grill since the Fabers took over, you are missing out on a hidden gem that packs so much value for the punch of amazing food!! We will be back!  Sooner rather than later!

  • Cute picture Lori! We have been there but not since the ownership changed, we will definitely have to go check it out. I love artichokes any way I find them!⚜
