Phila Deli-licious

Phila Deli-licious

I arrived at Phila Deli just before 11am in Tierra Verde. I noticed the parking lot was sparse and once I was inside there weren’t many full tables either. I was weary at first, but that changed quickly.

When I walked in I was cheerfully greeted by, Cameron, who I would later find out is the owners’ daughter. I chose my table and got to work deciding what to order.

Phila Deli is a family owned and operated restaurant. With Dad in the kitchen, Mom managing the floor and operations and daughter tending to the patrons – it’s truly a family affair. Cameron also let me know that the remainder of the staff are either her siblings or friends of the family.

I decided to order a variety of items off the menu that covered both breakfast and lunch/dinner. The breakfast menu is large, while not too overwhelming, serving everything from breakfast sandwiches, biscuits and gravy, omelets and sweet stacks such as pancakes and French toast (should I coin the term “Sweet Stacks”?). The lunch/dinner menu is more deli style forward showcasing soups, salads and quite the variety of deli sandwiches both cold and hot.

Cameron was able to recommend several items on the menu. After much deliberation I decided to go with a personal favorite – the biscuits and gravy, and the blueberry pancakes for breakfast. And off the deli menu I decided on the Philly Egg Rolls and a classic Philly Cheesesteak. While many of the other sandwich options sounded great, I couldn’t go without ordering a Philly.

By the time I ordered, I noticed that there was now an influx of patrons in the restaurant, and they were now on a wait. I must have just gotten in the door at the perfect time.

Biscuits-and-Gravy
Biscuits and Gravy

Let’s start off with the biscuits and gravy. Four biscuits smothered in a homemade sausage gravy. The biscuits, while small, were delicious and flaky and the perfect vehicle for the creamy and slightly spicy gravy.

Blueberry-Pancakes
Blueberry Pancakes

The sweet stack of blueberry pancakes was large and in charge, while the blueberries were small and mighty. The dish had three giant, fluffy on the inside, crispy on the outside pancakes with teeny tiny blueberries throughout. The dish was sweet, delightful and the baby blueberries made it even more enjoyable.

Philly-Egg-Rolls
Philly Egg Rolls with Queso Dip

For my lunch app, I decided to start with the Philly Egg Rolls, yes even though I also ordered a Philly Cheesesteak, but when you’re at a restaurant called Phila Deli… how can you not?! The egg rolls were filled with very thinly sliced ribeye steak, grilled onions and white American cheese and then wrapped in a perfectly crisp egg roll wrap and served with queso dipping sauce. Because why not dip cheese and steak into more cheese? The queso was actually a great accompaniment, adding a slight kick to the eggroll and making it next level.

I’m not going to lie, this might be sacrilege, I dipped my leftover Philly Cheesesteak sandwich in the queso dip for dinner tonight.

Which brings us to the star of the show, the Philly Cheesesteak. Phila Deli offers a variety of toppings for your Philly including mushrooms, onions, red peppers, jalapenos, hot cherry peppers and banana peppers. While I wanted to go a little crazy and throw some hot cherry peppers on my sandwich, I decided to stick with the classic mushroom, onion, peppers and I do not regret it. The sandwich was served on a soft Amoroso Roll with thinly sliced ribeye, American cheese and chopped veggies. Everything was mixed together perfectly so you got the perfect cheesy, meaty, sloppy bite every time. And if a Philly is sloppy, it’s an A+ in my book. Along with the Philly a pile of handcut fries were served. They were the perfect size to scoop up all the droppings from my sandwich.
