Cap’s Steamer Bar & Grill – The Best New Al Fresco Dining in Downtown St. Pete

Update September 12, 2023: PERMANENTLY CLOSED

It was a sad day for many when the St. Pete MacDinton’s announced it was closing. But that quickly turned around, at least for me, when it was revealed that Cap’s Steamer Bar & Grill would be taking over the outdoor bar and sidewalk space of the former MacDinton’s. A new cocktail bar with fresh seafood and shellfish will never disappoint me.

Cap’s Steamer Bar & Grill aims for a casual atmosphere with elevated food. And they do just that. The streetside bars and sidewalk tables allow for the casual atmosphere, while the food is anything but casual.

When my friends and I decided to visit Cap’s, we went for Sunday brunch. It was the perfect breezy day to sit outside and sip on some delicious cocktails and have fresh seafood and brunch foods. All of us decided to start with the Berry Skinny Margarita, which is a mix of fresh seasonal berries, Salt Berry Tequila, agave and lime juice. The drink was refreshing and light with a perfect amount of sweetness.

We decided to do a family style meal, sharing all of our dishes, starting with the oysters and conch ceviche. The oysters were fresh, Wild Sand P.E.I. oysters served with cocktail sauce, horseradish and lemons.

Conch Ceviche

The Conch Ceviche was mixed with fresh conch flown in from the Bahamas, sweet peppers, tomatoes and onion marinated in lime and orange juices then served with tortilla chips. While conch can sometimes be a little too chewy, this was the perfect consistency. Flavorful, light and delicious is the best way to describe this dish.

Next, we had my (unexpected) favorite dish of the day, a vanilla scented yogurt parfait. Housemade vanilla scented yogurt is topped with local honey, fresh berries and granola. While it may sound like a simple dish, it was so well executed. It may be one of my favorite brunch dishes in St. Pete.

Avocado_Toast
Avocado Toast

The Avocado Toast was another unexpectedly simple, yet delicious dish. Thick slices of toasted bread are topped with a chunky avocado mash, everything bagel seasoning, marinated tomatoes and micro greens.

Shakshuka
Shakshuka

A family dish of Chef Jason Gordon’s, the Eggs in Purgatory is a similar dish to Shakshuka. Eggs are cooked amongst an arrabbiata tomato sauce then topped with crème fraiche and served with crispy toast points, this dish awakens your senses from the spicy and tart sauce to the rich egg yolks.

Crab_Cake_Benedict
Crab Cake Benedict

The hearty Crab Cake Benedict has two large house made crab cakes on English muffins, arugula and topped with sunny side up eggs and a Cajun spiced hollandaise. And you can’t forget the crispy bacon and fruit served on the side.

Crème Anglaise Stuffed Churros

Last but not least, was the Crème Anglaise Stuffed Churros served with a sour cherry marmalade. From the outside these just look like your average churros, but once you take a bite you experience the smooth crème anglaise and are zapped (in a good way) by the sour cherry marmalade. The flavors come together to create a sweet flavor bomb in your mouth, that even the ones without a sweet tooth will love.
