Old Northeast Pizza: Jersey Style Slices in the Heart of One of St. Pete’s Quaintest Neighborhoods

PERMANENTLY CLOSED.

The Old Northeast is perhaps one of the most quaint and desirable neighborhoods within St. Petersburg and perhaps all of Tampa Bay. The brick streets are lined with pristine pads with some only steps away from the water downtown. Most parts of the neighborhood are very quiet, as it is a mostly residential area. However, if you make your way down 2nd St. N near 8th Ave N, you’ll encounter a small strip mall with just a few occupants – a tavern, a coffee shop, a laundromat and a pizza shop. Because the strip-mall is so minuscule, you won’t find heavy traffic or even a parking lot. Most of the traffic arriving there is via foot or bicycle – a lot of the their clientele reside within the neighborhood or within walking distance. The businesses within the plaza have become long-standing staples for the old NE and surrounding areas.

The Old Northeast Tavern occupies the largest amount of space in the building. Next door, you’ll find Old Northeast Pizza which inhabits a much smaller space. Their counter-service only establishment serves up pizzas, wings, sandwiches, calzones and more daily from 11:00AM – 10:00PM Sunday – Thursday and until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. Their pizza style is New Jersey and one of my favorite things about it is that it can be ordered as a whole pie (in one of two sizes) or you can also purchase it by the slice. Additionally, each slice can also be customized with your toppings of choice for a small up-charge.

One important detail to note prior to placing your order at this pizzeria is that they are a cash-only establishment and they do have an ATM onsite for your convenience. Old NE Pizza does not have inside seating; although, there are some chairs outside along the small building for enjoying your pizza, wings, etc… and the neighborhood sounds on a crisp Fall evening. While Old NE Pizza does not offer indoor seating, the Old Northeast Tavern next door does. In fact, you can place an order from the pizza joint whilst sitting inside the tavern and they’ll serve it to you.

While they’re known mostly for their pizzas of course, Old Northeast Pizza’s other menu items are not to be overlooked. Also on the menu, you’ll find hot and cold subs like the Classic Italian, stromboli, salads (I’ve read that the Antipasto is totally over the top and totally amazing), wings, calzones and breadsticks.

As far as pizzas are concerned, the sky is the limit. Both 14″ and 18″ Jersey style cheese pizzas are available in addition to pieces by the slice. Toppings of choice, like pepperoni and meats and various vegetables, can be added to pizza orders with a small fee. The standard pies at Old Northeast Pizza come dressed with traditional red sauce and cheese. For a white pizza, red sauce can be subbed out for a ricotta cheese blend – this costs the amount of a topping. For those who prefer a thicker crust, a Sicilian-style crust is also available for order in a 17″ size.

On a Friday evening we ordered a medium 14″ to enjoy between three people. We added pepperoni only, as we usually always do when it comes to pizza. It had been a handful of years since we had last had their pizza so we did not really know what to expect. The first notable detail to us was the crust/dough – we admire the amount of flavor that it boasts. It’s seasoned so well and tastes ultra fresh, even after a ride home in the car. We heated other pieces up later on on the grill and they crisped up quite well. Between the three of us, we managed to only eat half of the pizza (one piece each) with a few bites leftover. Needless to say, it’s quite filling!

We couldn’t limit our pizza sampling to just one type, of course. We had to give their standard cheese pizza some love, too. One piece was all that we ordered and then when we picked up our order, one of the employees insisted that we take a slice fresh from the oven for the road. We’re no fools and we never turn down an opportunity for hot and delicious pizza. It was the first piece of pizza we enjoyed that evening and it was devoured. Each bite was as savory and flavor-loaded as the last. The chewy, savory crust keeps you coming back for more.

In addition to the original, we had to head to the other end of the spectrum to try out a meat lovers rendition with pepperoni, ham, sausage, bacon and onion. This piece was as loaded down as you’d think. For me, it was a knife-and-fork type of pizza experience but still a good one, nonetheless.

When we read the word “crispy” under the Buffalo-style wing description, we knew what we had to do. We ordered ten and requested them to be cooked well done with their hot sauce. They have a sauce one level hotter, “ridiculous,” and had I not been eating them too my husband would’ve requested that. I am happy to report that the wings were satisfyingly crisp with just the right amount of heat. Super delicious and definitely hit the spot.

The Sausage Roll is precisely what it sounds like – think pepperoni roll, but swap in Italian sausage, green peppers, onions, Mozzarella and a scoop of marinara. Wrap all of that up in the pizza shop’s dough and bake and then voila. It’s served with another side of marinara on the side for dipping (completely recommended). The roll is extremely large – I recommend slicing and sharing between multiple folks as an appetizer.
