Rumba Island Grill & Bar Will Have Your Tastes Buds Dancin’

Rumba Island Grill & Bar has been a staple in Clearwater and Pinellas County for decades. A few years ago, rumors started swirling that Baystar Restaurant Group was opening another Rumba location on 4th Street in the former Wing House location. It was uncertain if the restaurant would ever open, as it took three years for the location to finally come to fruition. And it was worth the wait!

Rumba-Exterior
Rumba Exterior – Sunset

Rumba Island Grill & Bar serves island inspired food and drinks in a tropical atmosphere. The extensive menu is seafood heavy (with fresh fish coming off their own fleet of boats daily) including an array of appetizers/sharing plates, sandwiches, pastas, rice bowls, full entrees, and much, much more. On Saturdays and Sundays, the restaurant serves a large brunch menu. Rumba has early bird dinner specials and an all-day-every-day happy hour with $2.99 mugs of domestic beer and two-for-one select cocktails. On top of every day happy hour, the cocktail, wine, and beer selections are some of the most affordable, while also being quality and delicious, drinks in the area.

BRUNCH

Shimp and Grouper Omelette
Shrimp & Grouper Oscar Omelette

The Shrimp & Grouper Oscar Three-Egg Omelette is boldly stuffed with gulf pink shrimp, grouper, and spinach then topped with Swiss cheese & a light drizzle of Hollandaise sauce and served with a side of breakfast potatoes.

Steak-and-Eggs
Steak & Eggs

The Steak & Eggs is a kabob skewered with tender, juicy cubes of filet and slices of peppers and onions then topped with chimichurri and served with breakfast potatoes and your choice of eggs (I chose the perfectly cooked over medium, well-seasoned eggs).

Cocktails

Jalapeno-Cilantro-Margarita-and-Berries-and-Bubbles
Jalapeno Cilantro Margarita and Berries & Bubbles

Jalapeno Cilantro Margarita – a refreshing cocktail with Sauza tequila, fresh jalapeño, cilantro, and house-made sour mix.

Berries & Bubbles – One of the four signature bubbling cocktails, this drink is a mix of 360 vodka, black raspberry liquor, and house-made sour mix topped with brut champagne. This drink is the perfect balance of sweet and tart.

Peach-Sangria-and-Blueberry-Lemon-Drop
Peach Sangria and Blueberry Lemon Drop

Peach Sangria – Peach schnapps, pinot grigio, and pineapple juice. This drink is for those who love sweet drinks. While delicious, I would not be able to have more than one.

Blueberry Lemon Drop – 360 vodka, blueberry, house-made sour, and lemon. This is a very tart and refreshing cocktail.

Appetizers

Oysters-Bienville
Oysters Bienville

Oysters Bienville is a simple parmesan baked oyster. When they say simple is sometimes better, this is the definition of that. It’s unnecessary to completely hide the oyster with more than just parmesan when the parmesan complements the oyster just perfectly.

Shrimp-Cocktail
Shrimp Cocktail

Seasoned small shrimp are served over a zesty house-made cocktail sauce. I’ve ordered this dish on two separate occasions at Rumba and it still stands out as one of my favorites. The cold shrimp cocktail is the perfect addition to a nice cocktail or glass of wine on a hot day.

Steamin-Mussels
Steamin’ Mussels

The Steamin’ Mussels are officially my #1 dish at Rumba. I ordered them on my 4th visit and regret not trying them sooner. An abundant amount of mussels are steamed in a saffron infused coconut milk with tomatoes and green onions and served with herbed toast. The sauce is refreshing, with a slight heat and sweet. Once we made our way through the mussels, we asked for more bread to sop up the rest of the sauce so it wouldn’t go to waste. It was so good I would drink it out of a cup.

Raw Oysters

Simple, fresh, clean East coast raw oysters served with house-made cocktail sauce. Can’t go wrong with these.

Entrees

Rasta-Pasta
Rasta Pasta

My go-to entrée when I visit Rumba is always one of their pastas. This visit I ordered the Rasta Pasta which is linguini  served in a pool of creamy citrus sauce. You then choose your protein to top it off; blackened shrimp, sea bass, jerk chicken, or seafood mix (sauteed shrimp, scallops, and mussels). The dish looked so good, I even inspired my bar neighbor to order the same!

Killer-Hogfish-Sandwich
Killer Hogfish

Smack dab in the middle of the menu is the featured sandwich, Killer Hogfish, which is described as “THE BEST SANDWICH IN THE WORLD!” There is no other description, so you just have to trust that it’s the best. And, while I can’t speak for the world, I can speak for sandwiches I’ve had, and it was pretty high up there. We were able to convince our bartender to describe what was on the sandwich; Cuban bread, chili lime sauce, jalapeño jelly, onions, mushrooms, and panko crusted hogfish. It was a wild burst of flavor, the perfect combination to tantalize all of the taste buds. I would highly recommend trying this unique sandwich.

I have been to Rumba four times since they first opened. This is just a portion of the dishes I’ve tried and I haven’t had one disappoint me yet. Rumba is the perfect spot for any occasion from celebrating a milestone with friends and/or family to grabbing a drink and snacks with a friend at the bar.

Baystar Restaurant Group also owns several other staple restaurants in the Tampa Bay area including Salt Rock Grill, Island Way Grill, and Seaweed, just to name a few.
