A Culinary Journey at Sandra’s German Restaurant on St. Pete Beach

PERMANENTLY CLOSED

Whether you’re craving bratwursts or golasch, Sandra’s German Restaurant on St. Pete Beach is the place to get your comfort food cravings satisfied. Germans have been guzzling beer for long enough to know what soaks it up best: Wiener Schnitzel, pretzels, bratwursts and other comfort foods, all of which are divine at Sandra’s. Everything is made from scratch and the freshness does not go unnoticed.

Make sure you call ahead to book a reservation, and go hungry. Sandra’s brings together locals and tourists alike. Once you step inside you’ll be transported to a little quaint and homey German atmosphere and the first thing you’ll need to do is order a beer. It’s only right.

There’s great options for the beer lovers out there. You can go with a light lager like me, or try a true cloudy, dark wheat brew.

The warm German bread basket gave me great hope for the rest of the evening. The rolls and pretzels were soft and comforting and the house made garlic-herb butter was outstanding. We also each got a side salad with our meals.

Next up for appetizers was an obvious order of a freshly baked pretzel with mustard and a grilled bratwurst. The pretzel was everything you’d imagine and more with a crispy and salty outside and soft yet chewy inside. The bratwurst was good, so good that I ordered the main entree of it.

A German staple: Wiener Schnitzel. This golden, crispy goodness is veal scallopini, breaded and pan-fried and served with either potato salad or Spaetzle. We ordered it with the potato salad. If you’re looking for a true German comfort dish, this is it. The tender, pounded-thin veal and crisp coating was harmonious. You can actually hear Antje, the owner and chef at Sandra’s, pounding the veal in the kitchen, they don’t mess around here. No matter what I order on my next visit to Sandra’s I’m absolutely asking for a side of potato salad. It was warm, savory and unlike any other potato salad I’ve ever had.

The Schweinsbraten is oven-roasted pork loin in dark beer gravy served with Spaetzle and Bavarian Sauerkraut. Let me tell you, this pork falls apart and melts in your mouth so beautifully. The perfect bite here includes a spoonful of the Spaetzle soaked in the beer gravy with a piece of the pork. The Germans will be proud of this combination of flavors. The Spaetzle was made from scratch just two hours before we visited Sandra’s that day. Talk about freshness.

Sauerkraut has a unique zing and you either love it or you don’t. I personally enjoyed the lively acidity and tanginess at first but after a few bites, I was craving more of the savory flavors from the potato salad and Spaetzle. The Sauerkraut at Sandra’s is the most fresh and flavorful I’ve ever had.

If you’re not sure what to order and it’s your first time trying German food, definitely get the Bratwurst. It comes with Bavarian Sauerkraut and Spaetzle or potato salad and a tangy mustard. With each bite of the Bratwurst, you’re greeted by a burst of juiciness and a delightful blend of savory spices. The Spaetzel is buttery and warm.

A side of Red Cabbage made Aunt Karen happy and brought a touch of nostalgia to every bite. As for me, I wasn’t a huge fan. I will say it made my tastebuds dance from all the complex flavors. One bite went from sweet and vinegary to tangy and warm. It’s hard to describe because of how many flavors happen all at once. I’ll stick with the potato salad.

I am begging you to save room for dessert. The Homemade Apple Strudel with vanilla sauce was spectacular. The melody of textures in every bite really makes you want more and more. The sweetness from the apples and warmth and comfort from the layers of the delicate pastry plus the delicious vanilla sauce make this dessert one of my all time favorites in St. Pete.
