Crafty Squirrel’s New Menu Is Worth Getting Excited About

Crafty Squirrel, on the 200 block of Central Avenue, right in the heart of downtown St. Pete, is rocking a new menu that’s every bit as appealing for lunch as it is for those late-night munchies. After a couple of visits for lunch, we’ve already developed some huge favorites. In fact, three items stood out as particularly craveable: the Crunch Wrap Extreme, Tendies Time, and the Double-Double smash burger. All three are excellent.

For its first seven or eight years, Crafty Squirrel’s menu relied heavily on creative artisan pizzas. Those pizzas may be gone, but the inspiration and creativity that defined the kitchen are very much alive.

There’s a fun familiarity to the new menu. Some dishes tap into the nostalgic appeal of classic American fast-food favorites, while others draw inspiration from the laid-back, coastal food culture of Southern California. But these aren’t simply recreations. They’re Crafty Squirrel’s own interpretations, built with quality ingredients, thoughtful combinations, and plenty of personality.

The Chalupas are a great example. The Shwarmagedon brings shawarma chicken together with fluffy garlic sauce, cotija, fresh cucumber and tomato, crisp lettuce, pickled red onion, and cilantro. It’s a lively combination of savory, creamy, fresh, and tangy. The 90’s Beef Cake takes a more familiar Tex-Mex route, with seasoned ground beef, melted jack and cheddar, pico de gallo, sour cream, and crisp lettuce. Both are satisfying, flavor-packed handhelds.

The Smokey and The Brisket takes things in a decidedly smoky direction, layering smoked brisket, barbecue sauce, smoked gouda, pico de gallo, poblano ranch slaw, smoked onion aioli, and pickled red onion. The Porkin’ It goes in a different direction, pairing slow-cooked pork carnitas with Korean BBQ, sweet pineapple salsa, cotija, pico de gallo, and Biggity Bang aioli slaw. We enjoyed both, with the combination of sweet, savory, smoky, and tangy flavors making them especially fun to eat.

The Double-Double is a smash burger done right. Two beef patties, Squirrely sauce, onions, lettuce, tomato, pickles, and pickled red onions come together in a beautifully balanced combination. It’s juicy, flavorful, and remarkably tidy to eat. Lori especially loved that you can enjoy a proper burger without grease and drippings running down your hands and arms. That’s a surprisingly wonderful thing in a smash burger! The fries are excellent too.

The Cali Burrito is another winner. We went with the beef barbacoa, which comes with French fries, avocado, chipotle crema, salsa verde, pico de gallo, and house salsa. It’s hearty, loaded with contrasting textures, and brings together the savory richness of the barbacoa with creamy avocado, bright salsa, and the unexpected but welcome addition of fries inside the burrito.

The Crunch Wrap Extreme was one of our absolute favorites. A crispy tostada shell adds a satisfying crunch inside a flour tortilla packed with seasoned ground beef, cheese, pico de gallo, lettuce, avocado salsa, and sour cream. You get creamy, crunchy, savory, and fresh in every bite. Served with sweet potato tots, it’s an especially satisfying lunch.

Tendies Time might sound simple, but these chicken tenders are anything but ordinary. The hand-breaded chicken has a particularly fine, delicate crumb rather than the thick, crunchy coating you often find on fried chicken. It’s pleasantly soft and light, while the chicken itself remains tender and juicy. Lori immediately compared them to PDQ back in its early days, when their tenders were something special. They’re also reminiscent of the chicken tenders at J. Alexander’s, another favorite of ours. Served over fries with poblano ranch for dipping, this is comfort food done exceptionally well.

The Shrimp Tease brings a little coastal California sunshine to the menu. Fried or grilled shrimp are paired with ginger-ponzu slaw, Biggity Bang aioli, cucumber, and sesame seeds. There’s a nice balance of savory shrimp, cool crunch, and bright, Asian-inspired flavors.

And for something a little different, Wrap It Up, Caesar gives the familiar chicken Caesar a fun twist. Ours came with fried chicken (grilled is an option too), crisp lettuce, Caesar dressing, cotija, roasted pepitas, corn salsa, tortilla strips, and cracked pepper. What makes this one particularly interesting is the variety of textures. Different bites bring different combinations of crunchy tortilla strips, tender chicken, crisp greens, and a little pop of sweetness from the corn. It keeps things interesting all the way through.

And don’t overlook the Grip It and Sip It, a 32-ounce shareable cocktail that’s a fun mashup of a John Daly and a Mint Julep. Templeton Rye, mint cordial, ginger syrup, fresh lemon, and Sun Cruiser tea come together for a refreshing, citrusy, mint-forward drink with a whiskey backbone. Finished with a fresh mint bouquet, it’s tailor-made for sharing (although you might be tempted to keep it all to yourself).

We’ve tried quite a bit of the new menu now, and while we have our clear favorites, everything has been really good. There’s a lot to explore, plenty of variety, and a playful approach to comfort food that makes the menu genuinely fun.

Crafty Squirrel has successfully turned the page on its pizza chapter without losing what made it interesting in the first place: creativity, bold flavors, and food that makes you want another bite. Whether you’re stopping in for lunch, grabbing a casual dinner, or satisfying those late-night cravings, the new menu is well worth checking out.
