What to do for Cinco de Mayo in St. Petersburg, FL
Cinco de Mayo is fast approaching and so are the accompanying parties and celebrations. I like to think of Cinco de Mayo as the “Mexican St. Patrick’s Day”—most people have no clue what it is really about except a good excuse to day drink. Cinco de Mayo—literally the 5th of May—celebrates ….
“the Mexican Army’s unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza. In the United States, Cinco de Mayo has taken on a significance beyond that in Mexico. In the U.S. the date has become associated with the celebration of Mexican-American culture. In Mexico, the commemoration of the battle continues to be mostly ceremonial, such as through military parades.” – Wikipedia
If you read further into the Wikipedia article, you’ll find that we make a much bigger deal of Cinco de Mayo here in the U.S., than they do in Mexico, and that the celebration here is more of a general observance of Mexican heritage—especially the tequila and cuisine!
