Review of Leafy Greens Café

First off, let me start by saying, Thank God for St Pete, and all the fabulous local food to eat! Okay, sorry for the rhyme, but it’s true. See I moved here from Mobile, Alabama, and although there are some truly great local spots in my Southern hometown, it’s no St Pete. And to top it off, fresh local fare is always a winner for someone with food allergies, such as myself. Those of you that know me well, know me as the gluten-free, corn-free girl. Dining out can be difficult, especially with a corn intolerance, as it’s a common preservative and likes to hide everywhere! But when you know where your food is coming from, it gives you peace of mind. So many restaurants here use local produce and make their food fresh daily, in-house. I can enjoy going out to eat again! Now if you are seeking the freshest of the fresh, you gotta go raw vegan. I know what you non-vegan people are asking – how could raw food be that good? When done right, it’s good. And a place that’s doing it right is Leafy Greens Café. It’s a great allergy-friendly spot too, as the whole restaurant is gluten free and dairy free, non-GMO, and not to mention, they don’t use any corn in their recipes either. Hip-hip hooray!

My husband Stephen and I went there for dinner Friday night. This was not our first time so we knew the BYOB policy and brought our bottle of wine with us. We started off with their Caesar salad. It was simple but delicious and their homemade non-dairy Caesar style dressing was great. Next, it’s on to the star of the show, their Tuscan Pizza dish. The full order is plenty to share, so that’s what we did.

Look at those bright colors, all those fresh vegetables! I can just hear you vegan haters now . . . how can raw, cold food be good? I want hot food! But trust me, the temperature is the last thing on your mind when you bite into this pizza. It’s an explosion of flavors in your mouth! You will taste every bit of this dish with each bite – the tomatoes, peppers, minced garlic and cashews & shallots, all on top of their homemade walnut/hemp crust with cashew hummus spread and marinara sauce . . . so rich and filling! You won’t even realize you’re not having meat. Besides, we all don’t get enough veggies in our diets, right?

If you have room, which we always do, you order one of their homemade desserts. Today’s selection was their green apple cobbler, with crushed nuts for texture, and fresh strawberries. The cinnamon cobbler flavor tastes like Christmas in your mouth! And there is no added sugar! They use dates to sweeten up the dish naturally.
