Funky Sweets Review Nov 2018

Think funnel cakes, Dippin’ Dots, UNO playing cards and some groovy music in the background and you’ve got yourself one of the most unique places in St. Petersburg, Funky Sweets. If you’re anything like me, you love a funnel cake that’s light, warm and fluffy on the inside but still has that crunch on the outside. Don’t worry about waiting for the next fair to be in town when you can just head on over to Funky Sweets for the best funnel cakes imaginable! They also have amazing other fried goodies, Philadelphia Ice, Dippin’ Dots and more!

Owner Spencer Hall is the kind of guy you want to hang around with while indulging on some of the most delicious deep fried desserts around. The staff won’t judge you if you eat an entire funnel cake by yourself, and they are so welcoming, friendly and kind! Funky Sweets opened their doors in May 2016 with the inspiration to provide a happy spot for friends and family to hang out, dance to disco music and play some board games. With the upbeat 70’s music and vibrant decor, you’ll be totally groovin’ in no time.

You’ll definitely need to try some of these menu items:

Funnel cakes are an all time favorite for anyone! Here, they are traditional 3 or 8 inches, warm and fluffy, and you can add toppings to really make it your own. Of course I had to add chocolate drizzle.

If you’re looking to elevate your pumpkin pie cravings this fall, you have to try their seasonal deep fried pumpkin pie. What’s on the inside is what really matters here. The pumpkin pie was so tasty. Usually you’d expect an extremely overpowering pumpkin flavor, but not at Funky Sweets. It’s one of those seasonal menu items that’s just calling your name!

If your favorite dessert is cheesecake, have you enjoyed it deep fried with strawberries and ice cream? It’s a simple concoction of warmth from being fried, cool from the cheesecake and ice cream, and sweet from the strawberry puree! What more could you ask for?

The serving size for one slice is enough for a few people to share, but you might not want to since they’re that good!

The fried mini doughnuts might be small in size, but they’re mighty in fulfilling your cravings. These heavenly bite sized doughnuts are warm and soft, which is undoubtedly the best reason to eat them!

So maybe you’ve had fried Oreos before but these are different. Start with an Oreo, fill that Oreo with cookie dough, then deep fry the entire thing! Since I’m a chocolate fanatic and I love Oreos, this was one of my favorites on the menu. The Oreo was more soft and cake-like instead of that usual crunch. I recommend trying these when you visit!

There’s more to their menu than just deep fried items. They also offer another traditional dessert that you can usually only find at the ballpark, Dippin’ Dots. I tried their most popular flavor, banana split and then one of my favorites, cookies and cream.

The banana split Dippin’ Dots are true to their name, so make sure you like bananas! I’m not a huge fan but maybe you are!

I liked the Cookies and Cream more, but that’s a personal preference! I mentioned before that I love Oreos, and would prefer chocolate flavors over banana. Like you remember, they’ll melt in your mouth fast and cool you down!

Speaking of cool down, they also have Philadelphia Water Ice. If you’re unfamiliar, Philadelphia water ice is similar to Italian ice but its way more creamy instead of icey. Their top selling flavor is Mango, and there was no question why. It was so refreshing!

Funky Sweets is more than just a dessert spot. It’s also the perfect place to hang out with friends and family where you can pick one of their fun games or head out to their outdoor seating. When you’re there, you’re bobbin’ your head and tappin’ your toe to the disco music, laughing and making memories. Head there soon to show some love, where you’ll be reminded to keep it classy, St. Pete!
