Best Steak in St. Petersburg FL: A True Local Foodies List

Just like the time we published our 10 Best Italian Restaurants in St. Petersburg, FL, we did a Google search, and again found a lot of useless junk content that is auto-generated.

Please allow me to reiterate from our last top 10 article:

...the majority of the top 10 lists are auto-generated by check-ins, star ratings that don't have text to back-up the rating given, poor photos or no photos, and no professional writing or editing, and basically, no useful information at all.

We decided to fix that and do some actual work instead of having a computer auto-generate useless low quality content.

It's a tough job, but somebody's ... wait it's not a tough job! It's actually a moist and tender job if you go to these places.

Here are the 10 Best Steaks in St. Pete. The list is based on a poll conducted in our top-secret Facebook Group of 3,000 local foodies, and our own personal experience indulging in these great steaks.

1. Rococo Steak: Grass Fed Ribeye 16 oz.

Grass Fed Ribeye at Rococo Steak.

Grass Fed Ribeye at Rococo Steak.

The Grass Fed Ribeye above is accompanied by roasted garlic cloves, and Rococo's unique Creamed Corn Mash. The steak was pure melt in your mouth perfection, and we love the corn because it is fresh, hearty and thick - almost no sauce and a very far cry from the watery canned mess mom used to serve. I know this a steak article, but we have to tell you about the Creamed Corn Mash because it is so unique, and we got the inside scoop from the chef—info that is not on the menu.

They use fresh corn that they shuck from the cobs themselves at the restaurant. Then they grind up the kernels in a Robot Coupe food processor, and put them into a pan that goes into the oven at 200 degrees to slow cook for 3-hours. This causes the natural starches and sugars to come together and give it a cakey consistency. Then butter and salt are added. There is no actual cream added—it is three ingredients: corn, salt, and butter. It's our favorite accompaniment for Rococo's succulent Grass Fed Ribeye.

2. FarmTable Kitchen: Tomahawk Steak 32 oz.

FarmTable's Tomahawk steak is from Niman Ranch and is dry-aged for 35-days. It weighs in at a whopping 32 oz. It's definitely for two people! We were barely able to finish it. The steak was perfectly prepared and succulent.

3. Parkshore Grill: Ribeye 16 oz.

Parkshore Grill also uses Niman Ranch as their high-quality steak supplier. Our favorite is the 16 oz. Niman Ranch Rib Eye with Roasted Shallot Tarragon Butter. It's delicious and grilled perfectly every time. This one is accompanied by Grilled local Zucchini and Smoked Bacon, Manchego Mac & Cheese - (these were special, and not always on the menu).

4. Z Grille: Central Avenue Ribeye 16 oz.

UPDATE AUGUST 2017: RESTAURANT IS PERMANENTLY CLOSED

The Central Avenue Ribeye (Z Grille started out on Central Avenue years ago.) - is a 16 oz ribeye accompanied by serrano mash, grilled asparagus, and chipotle butter. It has a nice salt and a spicy seasoning blend and the steak has a perfect char from the grill. The dry spice is also added into a dollop of compound butter that adds a hearty richness to the juicy hunk of meat. Z makes tasty, hearty plates that just keep you coming back for more. Be sure to get the deviled eggs and short ribs too.

5. 1200 Chophouse: Tomahawk Ribeye 2.5 lbs

The steaks are prepared in a 1200° broiler, hence the name, 1200 Chophouse. It's a small place with a big reputation. Everyone raves about it, and many say it is the best steak they've ever had. The Tomahawk is for two people, and you still might have leftovers depending on what else you ordered. Sometimes there's a wait, but it is well worth it.

6. The Mill Restaurant: Ribeye 16 oz.

They definitely know how to make hearty, delectable food at The Mill. The last time we were there and Chef Ted came over to say hello, I told him (regarding the food) that "this is so good that I feel like I'm doing something illegal!"

The Ribeye is extremely juicy, tender and luscious–it melts in your mouth! They prepare the steaks in different ways on different occasions. This one is the Primal Cut Ribeye, with mushroom ketchup, salt baked roasted potatoes, braised swiss chard, topped with blue cheese butter—YUM!

Just like Parkshore Grill and FarmTable Kitchen, The Birch & Vine gets their meats from Niman Ranch, and they are absolutely delicious. The Birch's unique accompaniments are Yorkshire Pudding, Beef Stock Poached Free Range Egg, Grilled Broccolini, Sun Dried Tomato Puree, Stilton Butter, and Malted Steak Sauce.

8. Beau & Mo's Italian Eating House: Delmonico

At just 1-year old, Beau & Mo's has shot up the charts quickly with lots of rave reviews. It is casual, off the beaten path, with a family atmosphere, and so friendly that anyone is welcome to walk back into the kitchen to say hello to Chef Beau.

Beau & Mo's Italian Eating House is a "Chicago-style Italian Steakhouse" in the Historic Kenwood district of St. Pete. They offer pasta dishes, steaks and locally caught seafood, along with several local ingredients procured from the Saturday Morning Market in Downtown St. Petersburg.

Beau & Mo's says; "We serve our steaks aged 35 days in house, cut to order (16-48oz) corn fed Nebraska beef. When you start with quality you get quality. Can you say Delmonico! We had an Italian Steakhouse in Chicago - this is what we do."

9. Gratzzi Italian Grille: Porterhouse 22 oz.

Gratzzi actually sells more steak than they do spaghetti and meatballs! They are truly steak experts. They have several that are delicious, but their best seller is the 22 ounce Beef Porterhouse. Look for it as the Bistecca on the menu. It has a Barolo wine demi reduction and is seared medium-rare (you can order it how you want) to perfection in a cast iron skillet, accompanied by a classic sauce of roasted red peppers, olives, capers, tomatoes and basil. It is also served with vegetables, mashed potatoes, mushroom sauce, and what I like to call a "Baby Lasagna" which you can see on the top right of the plate. It is actually a little polenta, ricotta cheese and tomato sauce sandwich that I do not know the name of.

10. The Oyster Bar: Surf & Turf

Damn! Just damn! This 16 oz. ribeye and 8 oz. Lobster Tail is totally scrumptious! Lori and I shared this one recently, and I can't stop thinking about it. Everything just melts in your mouth. The flavors and textures are perfect. Yes, they have amazing oysters, which you should start with—do a combo of raw and cooked—get some red wine (ask for a recommendation), and then go to foodies heaven with the surf & turf! (I dipped the steak in the butter too. It's a little bit naughty, and a lot delicious.)
