GUSTO Italian Restaurant, located at 2827 16th St. N. in St Petersburg, offers a delightful array of Italian-American cuisine in a warm and welcoming environment. This restaurant offers Italian classics with a modern twist which makes it an idyllic spot for both traditionalists and those in search of an Italian-American blend. Whether you’re in search of satisfying pasta dishes or an enticing entree, GUSTO is sure to fulfill your cravings.
The restaurant is located in the greater Woodlawn area of St. Petersburg near the corner of bustling 16th St. N. and 30th Ave N. Initially, I was unsure as to what the parking situation would be like, but was pleasantly surprised with all of the spots available in front of the restaurant right off of 16th St. However, on a busy evening, I could see those parking spots filling up rather quickly.
We visited GUSTO early on a Saturday evening (5:30PM) without a reservation and had no issue at all acquiring seats of our choosing for our party of three. GUSTO has an expansive bar that almost runs the length of the restaurant. Their dining room possesses a number of tables for both small and large parties and when we finished our meal around 7:00PM, most of these tables were occupied. Per usual, we opted to enjoy our meal at the bar. Upon sitting down, we were greeted by Daniel, who took great care of us throughout the duration of our visit. He was incredibly pleasant and hospitable and was a huge help when it came down to deciding on our meal.
To begin our journey at GUSTO, we opted for a lovely Super Tuscan by Trambusti. Soon after we had our first sips of the wine, we talked with Daniel about recommended starters. He immediately pointed us towards the Mozzarella Wheel of the day. This mozzarella offering is stuffed with various ingredients and changes daily. The variation we had on this particular Saturday was served with olives, balsamic, cherry tomatoes, prosciutto and arugula. The ingredients are all rolled up in the mozzarella which is then sliced into thin pinwheel portions. This was a very enjoyable way to start our meal. The mozzarella itself was rather subtle and mild which allowed the other ingredients to take center stage. In my opinion, a drizzle of olive oil and a soft sprinkling of salt would’ve made the dish that much better.
Meatballs in marinara were savored along side the mozzarella. They were presented in their simplest form with red sauce and a generous coating of grated cheese. Two meatballs are the standard offering, so if you’re dining with more than a few people and select this as a starter, I recommend ordering two servings. Additionally, I highly suggest that you request a side of the garlic bread with the meatballs for scooping up the marinara. You won’t regret it.
Whilst finishing our starters, we enquired about the pastas and entrees with Daniel. The menu has a number of solid options, but isn’t too overwhelming. I find a large menu to be intimidating. For pasta, the Rigatoni Italia with Prosciutto Cotto, Grana Padano, mushrooms and cream sauce was the first recommendation. Daniel gave this dish a glowing review and stated that it was easily his favorite so naturally, we had to have it. One of the first things mentioned when we were discussing the menu was that the portions at GUSTO are quite large. When this Rigatoni dish arrived, that was immediately apparent. If we would have ordered this dish along with the appetizers, it would have been more than enough to sustain all three of us. The sauce is creamy, yet light and the prosciutto cotto is a welcomed bite – especially when encapsulated in a tube of rigatoni.
Before I visit a restaurant for a review, I do some extensive research. While looking into GUSTO, I noted that a number of diners ordered and loved the Lasagna Siciliano. I asked Daniel about this dish and he did confirm that it is a favorite amongst diners at GUSTO. House made Italian sauce with baby peas, mozzarella, marinara, Grana Padano and a dab of whipped rocotta – it’s hard to go wrong with this culmination of ingredients. The lasagna slice is presented in a small pipping hot skillet that is filled with GUSTO’s tasty red sauce. Again, the portion is quite large and could definitely shared with a few people. The use of sausage in this dish was appreciated as it added a lot of character and savory flavor. This was the unanimous favorite in our group.
GUSTO has a number of chicken dishes on their menu and Daniel noted, without hesitation, that the pistachio chicken cutlet was a clear fan-favorite. This was already on our radar so we were happy to hear him share this with us. The chicken is breaded in pistachio bread crumbs then lightly fried and served with roasted potatoes and tomatoes, broccolini and a touch of marinara. The crunch and texture that this chicken provided was wonderful. Overall, the flavor was mild but pleasant, especially after having a number of other dishes which were packed with zest. The roasted potatoes and tomatoes were the sleep hitter of this entree. They were seasoned simply yet full of essence.
For dessert offerings, Gusto has a few things on the menu, including a cannoli bar with a collection of different cannoli, gelato, tiramisu, creme brûlée and roasted pineapple with Italian sweet cream. I had viewed a number of photos online of the roasted pineapple prior to our visit to GUSTO and when Daniel informed us that that dessert was a favorite of his and many guests, we knew that that was a must-order. The pineapple is sliced into pieces and served with a caramelized sugar crust and Italian sweet cream. The presentation is beautiful as the slices of pineapple are arranged in half of the pineapple. It’s a very simple but gratifying dessert that provides just enough sweetness for those end of the dinner cravings. We would definitely order this sweet treat again.
GUSTO Italian restaurant is a premium destination when those cravings for approachable Italian cuisine hit. The menu is familiar, the pricing is approachable and the atmosphere is inviting for all, including children. They actually have a kids menu, which is something that I find to be quite rare. The food here is solid, the atmosphere is quaint and charming and the service is genuine.
