What happens when you grow up in a Mexican restaurant, then go to Austin, Texas to learn Tex-Mex cooking, come back and try to take over the kitchen?

Your parents kick you out and you open Capital Tacos.

Bobby and Kristel Heskett founded Capital Tacos in Land O’ Lakes, FL in 2013. Josh Luger and James Marcus, joined the Hesketts in the ownership group in 2016. The other locations currently include Wesley Chapel, New Port Richey, and Brandon.

The newest, and fifth location will be right here in St. Pete at 5226 4th St. North, slated to open mid-to-end of July.

They must be doing something right as they were named a Top 3 Taco In The Us By Foursquare/Business Insider and a Top 2 Place To Eat In Tampa/St. Pete by Yelp! in their first full year. They were also named The Taco Joint Everyone Is Talking About In Florida, and made the Top 50 Restaurants in Tampa by The Tampa Bay Times, among other accolades.

What makes Capital Tacos so extraordinary?

They make every single ingredient, over 100, from scratch, every day starting at 6:00 am. This includes everything from salsas to marinades. They are so serious about this that only one taco (The West Coast Special) out of 26 has pickled carrots, and they still make their own pickled carrots just for that one taco.

Not in the mood for tacos?

No problemo. Any of the 26 taco items can be made as a burrito, bowl, nachos, or a salad.

There are usually about seven different items on each taco, all unique to Capital Tacos, with everything being their own recipes created and made in-house. You can’t get stuff like this anywhere else.

Capital Tacos also strives to come up with unique ingredient combinations that haven’t been done before, and that you would never think of, but when you eat it, it’s spectacular.

A new taco will be introduced in the St. Pete store that will be exclusive to St. Petersburg at first, and then rolled out to the other locations.

People drive 30-minutes from St. Pete to the Brandon location.

As if the amazing food wasn’t enough, there is also the experience. There’s the fun atmosphere, and also the wacky promotions.

Instead of Taco Tuesday, they do Goofy Tuesday. A couple of past promos were, Terminator Day and Suit Day. Place your order sounding like Arnold Schwarzenegger as The Terminator and you get a buy one get one.  Wear a business suit on a weekend and get a free taco. If it is raining, you get to make your item “wet”—add melted cheese—for free. There is also a secret menu for social media followers. Fun!

Drinks include frozen sangria with five different fruits, an agave wine based frozen margarita, fresh squeezed lemonade, bottled beer, and beer buckets.
