Laugh & Learn While Cooking & Imbibing

There’s a new fun foodie activity in St. Pete, and it’s called The Chef’s Hat.

Is it a cooking class, or is it a party?

Yes.

Both.

Hailing from Chicago, The Chef’s Hat is now open for business in downtown St. Petersburg.

Lori and I went to the inaugural event on June 3rd, French Country Cooking.

At first it reminded me a little of my cooking classes in high school where there was a big room with a bunch of people learning, cooking, having fun, and helping each other … except we weren’t allowed to drink in high school. (I won’t mention what we did do before class though.)

The Chef’s Hat has two-to-four monthly (except Aug & Dec) themed cooking classes / events where adults socialize, learn different culinary skills, enjoy adult beverages, and at the end, you get to eat what you made. You will be guided all along the way by Chef Ivan Jeanblanc and his culinary team.

Ivan Jeanblanc and his team present the grand opening of The Chef’s Hat, a French themed group cooking event held at Openhouse in St Petersburg.

You get to use the best quality knives and cookware, and use a real commercial kitchen. How cool is that?

It all takes place in a new event space in downtown St. Pete called Open House. It’s in the original old Ricky P’s spot at 1113 Central Ave, St. Petersburg, FL 33705, right next to Intermezzo Coffee.

First, we learned how to shuck oysters. (We still have both hands and all ten fingers. Yay!) To accompany the oysters, we had Radishes with Salt and Butter. I never knew there was a use for radishes besides slicing them and putting into a salad. Let me tell you, radishes with salt & butter are the snack of the gods. We washed down the oysters and radishes with Champagne.

The good stuff

Next, we moved to stations to create the rest of the menu—Mushrooms with Eggs en Cocotte, Grilled Duck Breasts with Peaches, Fava Beans Piquant, and Cherry & Peach Papillotes. The entire time, we sampled wines from the Medoc Region.
